THERE is an exclusive club in British Airways. It comprises the survivors of a near catastrophic encounter with a plume of volcanic ash in south-east Asia.

All four engines of the Boeing 747 in which they were flying failed due to the choking effect of the ash particles.

The abrasive particles 'sandblasted' the windscreens, making forward visibility all but impossible.
