Only Walsh can tell why Christmas visit led to brutal murder

Maire Rankin's family may never know the full truth hidden in the mind of a killer, writes Eamon Keane

Why would a 45-year-old woman with a thriving pharmacy business, a beautiful young son and a husband with his own successful tax-consulting business savagely murder her 81-year-old neighbour?

Karen Walsh at least looked well in court last Tuesday. She always dressed elegantly and had regular botox treatments at Blackrock Clinic.

However, on Christmas Eve 2008, Walsh stayed in bed until 12 noon. We don't know why she slept in so late. Maybe she was just plain tired or maybe she had been drinking, as some suggested.
