THE orchestrated drama of the firing of General Stanley McChrystal by US President Barack Obama was carefully calculated by the White House to send a message to Americans about exactly who was boss.

One of the central criticisms of Mr Obama has been that he lacked toughness and could be indecisive.

The brutal manner in which Gen McChrystal was recalled to Washington and ignominiously dismissed was designed to counter this.
