Nicolas Leonard: Some veterans are glad to see Cameron get his comeuppance

David Cameron is now seriously at risk of becoming the fourth Conservative leader in a row to be dumped by his party without winning a general election.

Ironically, the biggest threat to Cameron's faltering hopes of getting into Number 10 Downing Street comes from revelations about a man who has played a crucial role over the past 13 years in protecting the Conservatives from going bankrupt.

He is Michael Ashcroft, a wealthy businessman who is always described as 'controversial' and whose title as a life peer, Baron Ashcroft of Chichester, makes him sound like the villain in a children's pantomime.
