Nicola Anderson: The world's his oyster, but for Michael D there's still no place quite like home

HE could probably have availed of an invitation to go Stateside for the 4th of July celebrations but President Michael D Higgins looked like there was nowhere else he would rather be.

And as colourful fireworks exploded over Galway Bay last night for the 236th celebration of US Independence Day, with a costumed parade through the streets earlier on, it seemed he had a point.

Holder of the highest office in the land, he may be on comfortable home turf, but the President is still plain "Michael D, a gentleman" and everyone hails him as a friend.
