Nicholas Leonard: Surge in support for liberals gives Brown plenty to smile about

'I lost on presentation," said the British prime minister, Gordon Brown, yesterday as he summed up his performance in the first-ever TV debate between the three main party leaders.

"I lost on style and maybe I lost on smiling," he added. "Some people might think I'm a sort of tough head teacher."

But Brown was doing plenty of smiling yesterday and he has good reason to be cheerful. The surge in support for the Liberal Democrats, as a result of the outstanding performance by their leader, Nick Clegg, in the debate, means that the chances of a hung parliament have greatly increased.
