Niall Toibin: Ireland has lost a treasure, but I have lost a great friend
I SHARED an apartment in London with David Kelly, while he worked for BBC TV and I at the National Theatre. On Saturday afternoons, while I went to Highbury to watch Arsenal, David went downtown harvesting jackets, slacks and socks for his wardrobe. Because he was first and foremost an actor and dressed accordingly.
I had first seen him stroll languidly up Goatstown Road in Dublin with an artist's board under his arm, wearing a cravat for God's sake!
He was 18, so was I.
