New garda assessment of IRA should take days, not months

It now looks like the fresh garda assessment of the current status of the Provisional IRA (PIRA) will not be completed for several months.

Some unionist politicians have been quick to exploit what they see as an apparent difference of opinion between the assessments issued last week by the PSNI in Belfast and Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan in a response to Sinn Féin last February.

Gardaí acknowledge privately that there is no substantial difference in the two views held by the two forces up to last week.
