Never again will we give leaders benefit of doubt
ACCORDING to an old American saying, the only good news people want to hear is about themselves. There's a lot of truth in that. We all believe that stories of wars, famines and financial crashes sell newspapers and increase television viewing.
But in Ireland at least, the theory has taken a bit of a knock in the present crisis. Journalists, along with the rest of the population, have grown thoroughly sick of the relentless diet of bad news. They long for stories of success and celebration of the human spirit. Look at the massive, world-wide coverage of the brilliant rescue of the Chilean miners.
Another thing about journalists, especially Irish journalists, is they are patriotic; they want our country to succeed.
