We found out the hard way that the Government can't save us from the harsh winds of international recession. Through it all, there was always the small crumb of comfort that at least it would protect us from some of the other, more tangible dangers closer to home.

Postal worker Brian Hennessy raped and strangled 30- year-old mother of two Sharon Whelan at her home in Roscon, Co Kilkenny, in the early hours of Christmas morning 2008. He then set fire to the house, killing her daughters, seven-year-old Zsara and two-year-old Nadia.
