Michael Brennan: Welcome to Planet Bertie, home of grand delusions
THERE is such a thing as the first law of public relations for basketballers, baseball players and other highly paid sports stars in the US. Thou shalt sound off against accepted ideas and institutions only when thou art playing at thine highest level of performance.
So basketballers who are scoring three pointers and spectacular slam dunks have that licence -- but the fans won't tolerate dissent from those who are not even getting their rebounds.
That is one rule that former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern -- currently battling a hostile public after previously being at the height of his powers -- has now broken. There is very little appetite for sermons on the mount from him given what has happened to the country.
