Michael Brennan: Star player Lenihan shows true grit in face of ill health

FINANCE Minister Brian Lenihan went to a rugby-playing school and is a keen supporter of the Athlone Town soccer club.

But his current strategy is more akin to what the Tyrone footballers did in Croke Park to win their first All-Ireland

Their star player Peter Canavan was struggling with an ankle injury and was in no fit state to last the entire All-Ireland final against Armagh in 2003. So he was brought off at half time and re-introduced again in the crucial closing stages to help the country win their first ever All-Ireland title.
