Maverick Kelly has won over his detractors

Morgan Kelly -- a lone wolf who has blazed a trail of dismal pessimism, or just the man who always gets it right, wonders Daniel McConnell

Professor Morgan Kelly's name entered the public lexicon in 2008 by way of a series of deeply pessimistic and provocative articles he wrote as Ireland's financial nightmare began to unfold.

His comments in December 2008 that the government would have been better off stockpiling €1.5bn of taxpayers' money in St Stephen's Green and setting it alight rather than putting it into Anglo Irish Bank shocked a nation.

However, for those aware of the reclusive academic, such an outburst was to be expected.
