IN its heyday, 'Dublin Opinion' regularly lampooned election manifestos as promises to drain the Shannon, De Valera's version of opium for the masses, designed to take their minds off the uncomfortable reality of unemployment, emigration and poverty.
It would be a pity if Scrap the Senate were to become the modern equivalent of drain the Shannon as a panacea for all ills.
There are much more important issues to be decided in the election, in particular how to deal with the banks and reduce the deficit with least damage to those who need them most.
