IF it were not all so sad and so serious, it would all be a bit of a laugh -- the Greens throwing their toys out of the political playpen, thus displaying a dilettante approach to politics and unfitness for government.

Certainly our European partners and the eternally sceptical money markets can only marvel as the Irish once again shoot themselves in the foot. The result in any case has been widespread confusion and loss of confidence at a time which called most of all for clarity, certainty, leadership and a firm sense of direction.

There is little division on what needs to happen and the steps which need to be taken -- a credible recovery plan, a deal with the IMF and the European institutions, a Budget, an early general election, and, at least for many of their backbenchers, a change at the top of Fianna Fail.
