Mary Kenny: The hearts and flowers of Valentine's Day are fine but don't forget the contract of marriage

Is the marriage of Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky in trouble? The simple answer is: we do not know. Nobody really knows what goes on in the internal dynamics of any marriage.

But the couple's union has been the subject of speculation about an impending break-up because Marc has taken leave from his job to spend time alone in Wyoming. And that is enough to spark rumours of divorce, or, according to some reports, Chelsea's requests for an annulment.

In fact, it's probably rather a good thing for couples to take time out from the constant companionship of each other. Barry Norman, the veteran TV showbiz commentator, whose wife Diana died suddenly last week (Diana was a novelist and a biographer of Constance Markievicz) said that the happiness and serenity of their 50-year marriage was because they "gave one another space". They didn't do everything together. He had his interests and she had hers. They also had a healthy row every now and again.
