Mark Garrod: Why Rory McIlroy isn’t a shoo-in for European golfer of the year

THE end of the year is nigh - and that means deciding who is Europe's golfer of the year.

Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes it is a close call and then there was 2010 when a panel of writers and broadcasters could not split US Open champion and Ryder Cup hero Graeme McDowell and USPGA champion and European number one Martin Kaymer.

By making them joint winners it was the first time since the award was introduced in 1985 that it was shared.
