Malignant clericalism at root of church crimes
A toxic culture of clericalism has almost destroyed the Catholic Church in Ireland. This is confirmed by yet again another investigation, this time into the diocese of Cloyne.
Apart from the alleged abusers themselves, the two principal villains in this are Bishop John Magee and his Vicar-General, Monsignor Denis O'Callaghan.
Magee is a man steeped in the clerical culture of the church, a man for whom the wider world barely exists. In keeping with this, he paid far more attention to the 'modernisation' of Cobh Cathedral than to the protection of children in his diocese.
