Listeners are the real winners as seasoned pros strut their stuff

John Boland

FORGET the Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila – this was the clash of the titans. RTE's former news anchorman Sean O'Rourke and Newstalk's new signing Pat Kenny went head-to-head to win the hearts and minds of morning-show listeners.

Or so, at any rate, it was being billed, though by the end it was difficult to make out if either of the pugilists had managed to lay a glove on the other. Certainly there were no match-deciding uppercuts to the status or reputation of either combatant.

O'Rourke, it must be said, had the harder task. Not alone was he new to this morning-show game, but live coverage at 11.30am of the Seamus Heaney funeral meant that he only had 90 uninterrupted minutes in which to show listeners what moves and paces they could expect from him.
