Lise Hand: Vulgar abuse and a bang on the head help to turn up heat
'DID Deputy Kenny get a hit on the head?" Noel Dempsey wondered aloud in the Dail yesterday. And the Transport Minister's concern for the Fine Gael leader was understandable, for a little earlier in the morning Enda had appeared to be suffering from some sort of concussion when he rose to his feet for Leaders' Questions.
It was possible that a blow to his noggin had made Enda forget that the purpose of Leaders' Questions was to provide the leaders of the opposition parties with an opportunity to excoriate the Government on its shortcomings, to call it to account over its decisions and to land a few low blows on the Taoiseach.
But instead Enda chose to use his allocated time with a long-winded and obsequious expression of support for the absent Brian Cowen's efforts to knock heads together in Hillsborough -- despite the fact that he had already done so the previous day.
