Lise Hand: Vinnie taught us everything we know

THE church was packed for the funeral of Vinnie Doyle, Editor extraordinaire and a man hailed as "a magnificent chronicler of our times".
It was full to the doors with newspaper men and women who had worked alongside him, who had got 'their start' in the business from him, who had fought with him (and usually lost), who had drank and swapped tall tales and celebrated scoops with him, who had sat in rival newspaper offices and cursed him when yet another Indo front-page story ruined their day.
And there was genuine and deeply felt sadness among the large congregation in the Church of the Annunciation in Rathfarnham yesterday at the sudden and untimely passing of a true legend of the newspaper business who had occupied the Editor's chair of the Irish Independent for 24 years.
