Lise Hand: Twisting in the wind after week of haywire dramatics
IT was 2pm on Saturday afternoon, Day Seven of BIFFO (Bungled. Ignominious. Frenzied. Flabbergasting. Overwrought) when Brian Cowen slowly began to uncurl his fist from the levers of power.
"I have decided on my own counsel to step down as leader of Fianna Fail," he declared to a packed press conference in the Merrion Hotel.
The Taoiseach was flanked by Tanaiste Mary Coughlan and Chief Whip John Curran, but in essence he was alone -- abandoned by his party, shunned by the electorate, and left to twist in the raging gale that had roared through the corridors of Leinster House for seven haywire, helter-skelter days.
