THE dog days of the political calendar all take place in August. It's traditionally the month when nothing much happens, when the denizens of Leinster House go to ground, leaving tumbleweeds to roll up and down the corridors of power.

But not this August. One dedicated (ex) Soldier of Destiny bravely kept the flag flying and the public's attention focussed on politics.

For hardly a day of the month passed without the latest plot twist in the Ivor Callely whodunit popping up on the airwaves and in the headlines.
