IT was impossible not to gravitate towards a television set yesterday as the emotional, life-affirming rescue of the Chilean miners unfolded from dawn.
In fairness, a good news story was sorely needed as a diversion from the relentless stream of doom and gloom enveloping the citizens of these shores in the grimmest of times.
However, it wouldn't be difficult for the more pessimistic TV viewers to divine dispiriting parallels between the plight of the men in the San Jose mine and our own toilers at the political coalface.
