It was Patrick Nulty's first day at big school. Escorted by a smiley Emmet Stagg, the freshly-elected Labour TD for Dublin West descended the steep steps of the Dail chamber a little shyly as his new classmates applauded from all sides.

Up in the distinguished visitors' gallery, his parents Patrick Senior and Rose and a group of family members looked on proudly.

He shook hands with the Taoiseach, was enfolded in a bear-hug from the Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore and then got welcoming handshakes from the other party leaders.
