Lise Hand: Mary, being female does not make you incompetent
IN AN instant cabinet reshuffle, Mary Coughlan assigned herself the portfolio Minister for Offence. She glared at Fine Gael's Charlie Flanagan across the chamber floor.
"If you want to throw a condescending sexist remark across the House, fine," she sniffed. "That is very much the calibre of yourself, Deputy Flanagan, and I would expect more of you after all these years in the House."
Goodness. What had cheeky Charlie said to the Tanaiste to provoke such a reaction? Had he told her to go and make him a nice cup of tea, like a good girl, and leave the running of the country to the menfolk?
