Lise Hand: Martin preaches unity -- but only north of the Border
Bathed in brilliant Indian summer sunlight yesterday morning, the Kilwickie estate in Lurgan, Co Armagh, looked benign and tranquil. But appearances can be deceptive.
For this housing estate in one of the most segregated towns in Northern Ireland is widely regarded as a recruiting ground for murderous groups such as the Real IRA, who were responsible for the car bomb in the outskirts of Derry city a week ago.
It's a tough place, with old-style uncompromising republican slogans daubed on the walls that lead into Kilwickie and tensions sporadically flare into rioting and thuggery.
