Lise Hand: Hats off to Michelle but King Richard steals show
Our politicians are usually unfazed by the spotlight. But there were a lot of nerves around last Tuesday as more than 30 of them prepared to throw shapes on a catwalk in the Shelbourne Hotel.
The Oireachtas Fashion Show was organised by Arts Minister Jimmy Deenihan and stylist Marietta Doran to raise funds for motor neurone disease research, after Fine Gael TD Nicky McFadden was diagnosed with the illness last year. To everybody's delight, Nicky turned up at the show.
One of the biggest cheers of the evening went to unlikely runway star Richard Bruton. Regarded as a serious sort of chap, he sauntered happily along the catwalk, grinning and waving to the audience, before turning and skipping like a pinstriped Laura Ingalls the whole way back.
