So, was this destined to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship? The signs were promising as evening rolled around and temperatures plummeted on Kildare Street. The rumour went around Leinster House at a quarter to six. "They've sent out for beer and pizza," declared one insider.
This was followed by another newsflash a few minutes later. "A poker game has started -- the winner gets to be Taoiseach".
Alas, both nuggets of gossip were no more than the mordant humour of insiders keeping vigil for white smoke emanating from Government Buildings -- or failing that, the screaming body of a defenestrated opposition leader.
