ONE has to admire the chutzpah (that's Clarespeak for 'brass neck') of the Banner County's Pat Breen.
The Fine Gael TD is a great man for bringing gifts for various poobahs when he travels abroad in his capacity as chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade. During a trip to China in May he presented Premier Xi Jinping with a photo of the calf named in his honour when the Chinese leader visited a farm in Sixmilebridge last year.
However – as the Clare TD knew full well – the Congressman's Irish roots are firmly planted in Graiguenamanagh, Kilkenny.
Now if he should pitch his hat again into the 2016 presidential ring, the Republican hopeful would be well advised to leave the Clare kit at home when he makes the obligatory candidate's pilgrimage back to the Auld Sod as he did last year.
The locals in Kilkenny might be able to tolerate Paul's staunchly right-wing politics, but they'd definitely take a dim view of him strutting his stuff in saffron and blue around the Marble City.
