Lise Hand: Benedict greeted by more cheers than jeers

As mass (pardon the pun) protests go, the anti-Benedict brigade lining the streets of Westminster yesterday was hardly of biblical proportions. Still, the small but feisty bunch gave it welly as the Popemobile motored gently up to the entrance to Westminster Abbey bang-on the Angelus hour of 6pm.

"BOOO!" shouted the group lustily, waving smartly-printed placards informing the world that 'The Pope is the Anti-Christ' and another quartet of grim-faced chaps hoisted a grubby-looking sign which warned, 'NO POPERY'.

A bigger band of believers counter-attacked swiftly. "WE LOVE THE POPE!' they bellowed. Beside them, one young woman wearing a 'Catholic and Proud' t-shirt bobbed up and down with a colourful placard which pronounced 'We Love U Papa more than Beans on Toast'.
