Light at end of our tunnel is false dawn
Far from recovery, Ireland remains in the midst of a perfect storm and it's up to Lenihan to restore calm, writes Daniel McConnell
THIS week one year ago, to much hype and fanfare, UCD economist Colm McCarthy published his report on government spending cuts, which would, we were told, form the basis of the Budget.
One year on, little has changed -- except we are €30bn further in debt, 60,000 more people are out of work and a similar number have left the country to seek work elsewhere.
Unsurprisingly, the McCarthy report remains almost untouched and unimplemented. Brian Cowen's Government remains in disarray, incapable of leadership or unity, and dangerously disconnected from the people. Cowen himself is now the subject of a whispering campaign aimed at unseating him.
