Life returns to Australia's 'Road of Death'
Australians mark-ed the first anniversary of the country's worst natural disaster yesterday with tears and a determination to rebuild after the devastating bush fires.
The 'Black Saturday' fires killed 173 people across the state of Victoria and left 7,000 homeless. Every property on Pine Ridge Road in the town of Kinglake was turned to ashes. But this week, at number 21, Philip Ferrell was sweating under the fierce midsummer sun, pegging out the shape of what will become his new veranda.
The hardy 76-year-old is busy rebuilding his home from scratch, with the help of his son John. His eyes fill up with tears when he looks across the barren slope towards the lot where the house he had lived in for 30 years once stood.
