THE David and Goliath complex runs deep in Ireland and patriotism runs deeper still, so Sean Quinn's play for the hearts and minds of the public was always going to be a compelling one.

From a 15-man operation in the back end of Cavan, Quinn Insurance grew to become the second biggest insurer in the Irish market, displacing massive multi-nationals along the way.

And in a landscape populated by the likes of Allianz, Axa and Aviva, Quinn is the only wholly-Irish owned player we've got left, a lone bastion of nationalism in a truly international market.
