Labour is destined to repeat cycle of doom until it learns from past failures

Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it. The saying is often credited to the Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana.

Long before him, our own Edmund Burke said almost exactly the same thing: "Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it." So many eminent persons have echoed those words that they have become almost a cliche. That does not make them any less true.

Today Irish political history will repeat itself in the European and local elections. From the beginning of the campaign, everybody has agreed on one point: Labour will suffer devastating losses.
