Tomorrow evening, Enda Kenny will walk into a room of Fine Gael TDs and senators to face the question on the lips of everybody in the country: When will he step down?

Party members hope he will outline a clear, unambiguous exit strategy and give a formal blessing to the leadership contenders to kick-start their succession campaigns.

Word will quickly filter out to the journalists who will fatefully write the first draft of history based on information from sources inside the room.
