The hour is almost upon us. Sands have shifted within Fine Gael over the past week as idle speculation about the leadership switched to detailed planning.

While Taoiseach Enda Kenny was certainly not in the mood for talking about his future plans during his visit to Canada, at home his two potential heirs were dramatically cranking up the music. Numbers were being crunched, strategy meetings held and policy plans committed to paper.

All the moveable deadlines set by Mr Kenny have now passed, except for the resolution of talks on a new Assembly in Northern Ireland, which is likely to take months.
