Fianna Fáil's Timmy Dooley laughed across the Dáil chamber that the minister's attack was little more than "Deputy Varadkar's pitch for the party leadership".

He was deadly accurate because for all the talk of the X factor and big ideas that we've heard from Leo Varadkar in recent days, many in Fianna Fáil fear the real reason so many TDs and senators backed him so quickly.

They cast their minds back just six weeks to an ordinary Thursday afternoon when the Government was again on the back foot over water charges.
