Kate Rowan: Why Lord of the Rings hobbits and All Blacks have something in common

AS an outsider thinking about New Zealand, what do you associate with the country? On a very surface level two global brands will hit many as flag bearers for the island nation: The Lord of the Rings films and the All Blacks.



The celebrated heroes of the former are the diminutive hobbits fighting the big scary guys, while the national rugby team are famed for their large statures and are often perceived as the big scary guys in the Test match arena!



While these two almost contrary images of the country seem an incongruous pair, they have one thing in common; both sets of protagonists are tough and very determined.
