Julia Molony: Thompson on right track with 'Mum's Guide to Sex'
Actress's handbook for daughter can only help her navigate in the twerking and twizzlers generation, writes Julia Molony
Emma Thompson has written a "sex handbook" for her daughter. Which begs the question: what is a sex handbook, exactly? Hopefully nothing like a handbook for a dishwasher or a blender; which usually have operating instructions, washing precautions and advice on spare parts.
Thompson's daughter Gaia is 13 years old and thus, part of the internet porn generation – those whose sexual coming of age coincides with an era in which pornography has seeped into every nook and cranny of the culture and tinged everything blue.
As a result, Thompson has been left in a "constant state of anxiety" about what gynaecological horrors might await her daughter's eyes whenever they fall on a smartphone. Her fightback against the porn-tsunami then takes the form of a parental guide, in which she has laid out some facts about "where emotions are felt in the body, about sexual feelings and the connection between sex and emotions".
