Many people today seem to think that history is just about commemoration, says John-Paul McCarthy
ARE you getting weary of all this public remem-bering stuff as we cross the threshold into the 1912-1916 anniversaries?
The History Ireland-sponsored 'hedge school' conference on 1916 last Saturday, at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, conveyed, at least to me, a lot of what is wrong with the commemoration mania.
The Irish Times reported that proceedings kicked off with questions such as, "How do you commemorate? Who should be involved? Is there a danger the commemorations will be hijacked by certain individuals or organisations?"
