John-Paul McCarthy: It is up to Labour to act as the 'real opposition' in this Cabinet

The party's lack of urgency in the Shatter affair is an example of a larger failure.

IS IT likely that the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, has learned his lesson after the confidence vote in the Dail?

Not really, considering the coalition Government's crushing majority that easily repulsed the Opposition's modest probe.

This kind of parliamentary arithmetic puts a special responsibility on the shoulders of the smaller coalition partner.
