COUNT day can be a strange and exciting day in politics. Before any votes are officially counted we have a fair idea how things are going to pan out thanks to the tally men and women.

Today has been no different. Sean Gallagher looks like being disappointed tonight. In one sense it’s not a bad showing at all considering he was a no hoper a few months ago. However he came so close and has watched it slip through his fingers at the eleventh hour if the tallies are to be believed.

Michael D. Higgins has put in a powerful performance in the end and it proves without doubt that he is the choice of the people taking votes in every location and among every demographic. The only disappointment for the political nerds is that we do not seem to be headed for the cliff-hanger that we had hoped for.
