Johnny Fallon: FF dithered and SF saw its golden opportunity
WE are all familiar with phrases such as ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained’ and ‘Who dares wins’. Such phrases have developed over many years, and in no sphere are they more appropriate than politics. It is a game of risk and anyone afraid of taking a calculated risk will probably not amount to very much in politics.
Sinn Fein is keenly aware of this.
Once Fianna Fail decided that the presidency was not worth contesting, Sinn Fein saw a golden opportunity. The contrast in approaches is stark. Make no mistake it was also intentional. Some people were surprised that SF chose Martin McGuinness, a man with so much baggage, for their presidential candidate.
