John Walshe: Teaching union's hard line will cost its members dear

THEY ignored the advice of their own leaders, and now members of the Teachers' Union of Ireland are about to pay the price.

And in doing so, the union has triggered a dramatic face-off with the Government that could result in the first wave of compulsory redundancies in the history of the public service.

The Government is determined that the TUI will pay a very heavy penalty for refusing to halt its limited industrial action and enter direct talks on the Croke Park agreement.
