John Drennan: The truth is that Ireland is still a state set to fail
Forget the political witch-hunt; the voters deserve a comprehensive narrative of the Anglo affair.
If we were to summarise in a sentence the most appropriate Bill of Indictment for Fianna Fail's 14 years in government it would be that Bertie, with the political collusion of the avaricious PDs, created a country that was set up to fail.
The Great Irish Disruption did not grow like Topsy or because of Anglo, but was instead the unexpected child of amoral political thoughtlessness and short-termism where focus-group-driven politicians were concerned only with what might happen next week rather than next year.
We then of course elected a government to fix that and lived happily ever after . . . or that at least was the theory.
