JOAN BURTON

IT IS, one supposes, one of the ironies of the world that the minister who was most snubbed by Eamon Gilmore's Cabinet debacle now represents the party's best chance of a political future.

We do not mean by this that Joan Burton should seek the head of her nemesis for she is too loyal and too clever to go causing trouble in the party over Eamon Gilmore's struggles.

Burton knows that when it comes to Irish political faction fighting, you are better to wait for the apple to drop into your lap, for if you throw stones at the trees, the stone is as likely as the desired fruit to land on your head.
