James Downey: Signs of change, but North still has a long way to go

ULSTER Conservatives and Unionists New Force. What a terrible title. What a terrible acronym: UCUNF. And what a terrible idea.

The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), which dominated Northern politics for half a century, was undermined by the rise of the Reverend Ian Paisley and his Democratic Unionists. Now it could be on the brink of extinction. And its bizarre alliance with its old friends, the British Tories, certainly won't help.

Under its new title, it proclaimed itself non-sectarian. Then it made a deal with the DUP to find an agreed single unionist candidate to fight next Thursday's Westminster general election in the Fermanagh-South Tyrone constituency. So much for non-sectarianism.
