James Downey: Kenny offers us 'Mr Fix It' instead of the Big Picture
BROKEN economy, broken political system, broken public finances, broken public services, broken majority church, broken spirits: in short, a broken society. Who can repair it?
Not Brian Cowen, no matter how skilfully he shuffles his Cabinet cards. Not any Fianna Fail leader. Fianna Fail has been in office continuously for a whole generation, with only one break of two-and-a-half years. Far too long. The party is tired, out of vigour, out of ideas.
Thus far in our response to the economic and financial crisis, only two groups of people have engendered any sense that they might manage, somehow, sometime, to wrench us out of our troubles. One is Brian Lenihan and his advisers. Right or wrong, the finance minister has a plan. The other is the cream of the 'great and good' who gathered at Farmleigh to focus on the economy and on the diaspora.
