EVERY new government deserves a fair wind, and in today's opinion poll the voters have given the Fine Gael-Labour coalition exactly that.

But they have done more. They have given it an endorsement of extraordinary dimensions.

And they have done this at a time when people's hopes and expectations for themselves, their families and their country are on the floor.
